Barry is recovering from Surgery – God’s Spirit is Active

Dear Friend of All the King’s Horses Ministry:

Mark Twain said: “Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.” The truth is, we all face trials which seem destined to kill us, or at least detract from the plans we hold so dear. God often re-directs our plans with deathly events, but in His Kingdom death always leads to new life, and weakness becomes our ultimate power, due to the sufficiency of God’s grace in Christ.

Thank you for all who have prayed for my recovery from my recent surgery. I praise God for a wonderful surgeon who performed an extensive reconstruction on my left shoulder on September 12th, after the severe accident I suffered August 14th. The procedure was tantamount to Tommy John surgery times 3 (3 cadaver tendons implanted to replace those which were destroyed in my rotator cuff). Bones needed to be re-positioned and my bicep needed to be re-attached. After sleeping in a chair for the initial weeks, I am now one month into a six to nine month recovery, working hard twice per day at home and with outstanding professional therapists 3 x per week.

I am grateful that God has supplied the grace needed to care for my struggling son with one arm. Treating his eyes with various medications 12 x per day with one arm has been an immense challenge. Neighbors have stepped in to tie his shoes (which I still cannot do even for myself … Velcro is a wonderful invention!) and to walk Bryson’s dog. I postponed the surgery that is needed for Bryson’s left eye from September until the point when I will be able to provide more capable hands-on post surgical care. This surgery will be followed 3 months later with a needed procedure in his right eye. God knows the timing that is best, and I trust Him fully to guide and lead, even as the Prophet said:

“Although the Lord has given you bread of privation and water of oppression, He, your Teacher will no longer hide Himself, but your eyes will behold your Teacher. Your ears will hear a word behind you, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right or to the left.” Isaiah 30:20-21 

The All the King’s Horses Ministry office renovation is nearly completed, and our Saturday morning Men’s Bible study will begin meeting once again later this month. Each day I remain blessed with the privilege of counseling and discipling those God has entrusted to me, either in person or on the phone.

I was blessed to minister at a conference for special needs families at Lafayette Federated Church on September 29th, and I am looking forward to a speaking engagement at a church in Wayne PA on November 3rd. In every audience, there are broken people desperate for hope. God often reminds me of the only message broken people need to hear, as it is the same message I need to drink in daily. The message must always and only be about Christ, and His grace:

As mentioned in our last Newsletter, we have received word that the book is impacting the lives of some who are incarcerated in our prisons.
